DESCRIPTION

Stick Insect is the moniker for Jeannine Durfee's solo songs. She has recorded with Phil Krauth and Viva Satellite! as well as being a member of the Gazeteers and the Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers. Her double bass guitar sound is sometimes reminiscent of Flin Flon but enters quite another stratosphere with the inspiration of Japanese pop music.

MARKINGS

Two sets of basses, two sets of drums (fast, fast, drums), glockenspiel, keyboard, and girl singers.

LIFECYCLE

Hatched as a recording project of Jeannine Durfee - member of Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers (Teen-Beat/Darla/555) - Stick Insect grew and transformed into a live band (exciting to watch) before entering a cocoon in preparation for its next transformation. Prior to the Sisterhood, Durfee was known to the Washington D.C. / Teen-Beat music scene for appearances on records by Andrew Beaujon (Eggs), Viva Satellite, and Phil Krauth (Unrest). She has also been a member of The Gazetteers (Magic Marker/ salt in Wound).

BEHAVIOUR

Stick Insect is recognized by its typically fast, tight drumbeats and large, layered bass sounds, balanced by infectious glockenspiel and vocal melodies. The overall effect is hard-hitting and direct, but coy.

PRESS

"By stripping her delivery of anything resembling seductiveness (which would imply a scheming calculation, a knowingness that thwarts innocence), Durfee is able to project a guileless yearning that is easy to sympathize with, easy to assume as an expression of your own hopes if you were so inclined."
- Splendid E-Zine

"Her fragile style makes the song's message of empowerment that much stronger."
- All Music Guide
