RECORDING NOTES
Religious imagery always seems to show up in my songs. My father was a Lutheran minister and I probably spent about half of my formative years within the confines of a church. Because I played piano at a young age, I was often asked to accompany the choir or leading the hymns/service music when our organist was out of town. One of my fondest memories of this was playing "Icicle" by Tori Amos as a prelude to Sunday service. It was a beautiful song - one could mistake it for an impressionist-era piece by Debussy or Ravel - but the lyrics spoke of twisting the sacred with the profane. My favorite line was "I think the Good Book is missing some pages". I don't think anyone in church picked up on that, but it was my way of subverting the rigid and traditional confines that I was expected to accept.
I would also make up my own instrumental pieces for incidental music at church. I think "Incarnate" and "October" were recycled many times for this purpose. It was around my sophomore year in high school when I really started researching other religions and philosophic viewpoints and was also yearning for a time when things seemed much simpler. There is a battle within the self in these songs - getting caught between the black and the white - which represented to me that the world is so much bigger and more complex than just one interpretation of it.
"Incaranate" also ripped off a beat from an Amy Grant song, so I guess the sacred and profane came full circle on that one.
Another song recorded during this period was called "Black Magic" and it appeared on the 1997 Teenbeat sampler. It's one of my favorite songs and also my first song to ever appear on compact disc.
